Ask just about anyone. They'll all tell you they're in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. Just name the situation, and ask. They'll all say, yes, gays should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, equal protection of the law, etc.
Then you ask about gay marriage, and that's when all this talk of equality stops.
More than half of all people in the United States oppose gay marriage, even though three fourths are otherwise supportive of gay rights. This means that many of the same people who are passionately in favor of gay rights oppose gays on this one issue.

I lean like a stalk of corn in the warm mid-western air. Thousands of curious eyes stare at me to see if I can withstand the pounding flood of rushing water. My eyes begin to burn as synchronized drumbeats of tear gas fill the air around me. In front of me is a rusted chain link fence with a line of police officers equipped with nightsticks and plexiglass. Rubber bullets are also whizzing by as the water cannons blast me and the other innocent protesters. I then hear somebody shriek, "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!"
